Indiana AHEC Scholars: Community Healthcare Fellowship

East Indiana AHEC is pleased to invite health professions college students to apply for the AHEC Scholars Community Healthcare Fellowship.  AHEC Scholars participants will come away from the fellowship ready to enter the health professions workforce with a deeper understanding of providing healthcare to underserved populations, working in interprofessional teams, and caring for patients in the context of rural communities.

Indiana AHEC Scholars is a two-year program designed to improve a health professions student’s practice readiness skillset. Scholars is intended for students who have a strong interest in providing care to those living in rural and medically underserved communities across Indiana in positions such as physicians, physician assistants, nurses, public health practitioners, respiratory therapists, physical therapists, and other allied health occupations.

Indiana AHEC Scholars will participate in a mix of online training and community-based learning in rural and underserved communities throughout the state. Through these experiences, students train side-by-side with healthcare professionals and community members. Obtaining these skills and practices in the field allows Scholars to increase knowledge, develop expertise, clarify values and develop their capacity to contribute to communities in need.

  • Students will be part of an interprofessional group of participants and have the chance to learn with, from, and about students from other health care disciplines.
  • Students will be assigned to teams based on their geographic location within the EI-AHEC region to make in-person learning activities as accessible as possible.
  • Students will receive a stipend each semester program to support their participation.  The stipend amounts increment up each semester a Scholar progresses throught the program and will total $1,800 over two years.
