Brain Injury Medicine Fellowship

The UW Department of Rehabilitation Medicine offers a one-year clinical ACGME-accredited fellowship in Brain Injury Medicine. The Brain Injury Medicine Fellowship Program Director is Cherry Junn, MD.

Program Mission Statement

The program’s mission is to:

1. Develop exemplary physicians who will provide excellent care for patients with acquired brain injury across multiple healthcare settings and lifespan.
2. Train experienced educators in Brain Injury Medicine.
3. Prepare fellows to be well-rounded practitioners with expertise in acquired brain injury to meet individualized learning and professional goals. 

This mission statement is in-line with the UW GME office’s mission to “guide, motivate and enlighten the next generation of exceptional physicians” as well as the mission of the Sponsoring Institution, "1) Meeting the healthcare needs of our region, especially by recognizing the importance of primary care and providing service to underserved populations, and 2) Advancing knowledge and assuming leadership in the biomedical sciences and in academic medicine."

Program Aims

• Integration: We develop exemplary physicians who will provide excellent care for patients of all ages with acquired brain injuries by providing a training experience across multiple healthcare settings for the diverse communities we serve.
• Education: We train fellows to be experienced educators in Brain Injury Medicine to various audiences across disciplines.
• Intentional and individualized curriculum: We prepare fellows to be well-rounded practitioners with expertise in acquired brain injury to meet individualized learning and professional goals. 

We strive to enhance community access, regionally and nationally, to physicians with advanced training in the care of those with acquired brain injury through education and personalized mentorship.

The Fellow will be part of an interdisciplinary team providing state of the art care to persons with traumatic brain injury, stroke, CNS neoplasms, anoxic brain injury, and other brain disorders.

The clinical fellowship experience includes acute and chronic management of patients, with a wide range of educational opportunities. The Fellow is primarily supervised by PM&R faculty and will also work with neuroradiologists, neurosurgeons, neurologists, neuropsychologists and other medical and rehabilitation providers in support of educational goals. The fellowship curriculum aligns with newly released program requirements and examination outline in Brain Injury Medicine.

UW Medicine is the home of the UW TBI Model System and Harborview Medical Center (HMC). HMC is a Level I Trauma Center and is certified as a primary stroke center by The Joint Commission.

Fellows will have the opportunity to participate in clinical research with a nationally renowned team including physiatry, neuropsychology, clinical psychology, occupational therapy, rehabilitation counseling, and statistics. Additionally, we provide mentorship in educational experiences with opportunities to teach practicing physicians, residents, medical students and allied health care providers.

Applying

The program will start accepting application materials for the 2026-2027 academic year in summer 2025. The deadline to submit the application is September 1, 2025, with interviews occurring in October-November.

Individuals may apply for the Brain Injury Fellowship by submitting through ERAS. Interviews will be held virtually for all candidates October through November 2025. These interviews must not be recorded. Lastly, please note that “second-look” visits or any formal in-person events are not permitted at any time during the recruitment season to maintain a level playing field for all applicants.

We participate in the National Resident Matching Program (NRMP). You must register for the match in addition to applying through ERAS. Appointments are made through the Brain Injury Medicine Match, included under the Rehabilitation Medicine Match.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants for the Brain Injury Medicine Fellowship must meet the following criteria:

• In the final year of an ACGME-accredited Neurology, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, or Psychiatry residency program or successful completion.
• Successful completion of USMLE or COMLEX.
• Eligible for limited medical licensure in the state of Washington.

Successful applicants should demonstrate a clear interest in Brain Injury Medicine, strong history of academic excellence, resilience and ability to work in diverse teams. Applications from specialties outside of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation (PM&R) will be considered. Successful applicants from all specialties will demonstrate sufficient experience with acute inpatient rehabilitation care and rehabilitation medicine consultation to appropriately serve at fellowship level on clinical care teams.

Mentorship for the University of Washington Brain Injury Fellowship is led by Cherry Junn, MD. A multi-disciplinary team of faculty from the UW Department of Rehabilitation Medicine train and support the Fellow during the training experience.
