Mission Statement
HCA HealthONE Aurora Family Medicine Residency Program’s mission is to develop the next generation of physicians and physician leaders. As a part of HCA Healthcare, we are driven by a single mission: Above all else, we are committed to the care and improvement of human life.
This program is designed to offer residents a rewarding, educational environment where residents are provided individualized learning opportunities by faculty and staff who support and sustain one another throughout quality care delivery. Our faculty are committed to ensuring the residents' clinical experience and educational needs are fulfilled while expanding residents’ perspectives to be inclusive of cultures, values, and ideals.

Our program also offers specialized tracks for interested participants.
Sports medicine
This track is for residents intending to pursue a sports medicine fellowship as well as those who simply desire sports medicine to be a significant part of their practice. Residents will have additional opportunities as a team physician with a local high school, event medicine and MSK ultrasound- diagnostic and injections.
Maternity care
The track is designed for the resident who intends to have maternity care as a significant part of their practice. The focus of the track is to provide additional experience in the care of pregnant women including prenatal care, limited OB Ultrasound, Antepartum NSTs and the management of complications of pregnancy.
Wilderness medicine
This track is for residents interested in additional wilderness medicine training. The track aligns with many of the Wilderness Medical Society criteria for Fellowship in the Academy of Wilderness Medicine. AWLS and other conferences are completed. There is an opportunity for an away elective.
Osteopathic manual medicine
This is for residents who want OMM as a large part of their practice. There will be extra opportunities at our clinic as well as rotations to provide OMM.
Global medicine
This track is designed to increase our residents' understanding of zoonotic diseases, travel internationally with faculty, and increase appreciation for our international patients' unique backgrounds.
Hospitalist
This track is designed for the resident who intends on having inpatient medicine as a significant part of his/her practice. It is anticipated that at the end of the residency, the resident will feel comfortable managing the wide variety of medical problems in adult patients, including those that are critically ill.
Training and education
Sky Ridge Medical Center is a 287-bed acute hospital serving residents and visitors of the southern Denver metro area. Owned by HCA Healthcare, Sky Ridge offers a Level II 24-hour emergency room, diagnostic services, inpatient and outpatient surgery options, cath lab and rehabilitation programs. Our inpatient rotations take place at Sky Ridge Medical Center and our outpatient clinic is Cornerstone Family Practice In Aurora CO.
Program Curriculum
Your curriculum is divided into 13 four-week blocks with a goal of balancing ACGME requirements with an abundance of available elective time to allow residents time to pursue specific tracks or just hone their skills.

PGY 1
Orientation
- 1 month introduction to outpatient, inpatient, and labor and delivery, as well as workshops.
Family Medicine Practice
- 1-month outpatient clinic at Cornerstone Family Practice
- Initial development of skills and confidence in outpatient clinic, ultrasound and procedures as well as OPP and OMM
Inpatient medicine
- 3 months at SRMC
- Internal medicine and Family Medicine attendings provide an exceptional learning environment balancing patient volume and teaching
Obstetrics
- 2 months at TMCA
- Manage and deliver laboring patients in L&D with family physicians, private OB/GYNs, and OB laborists and go to OB clinic
Sports medicine
- 1 month in outpatient family physician / orthopedic surgery offices
- Opportunity to begin developing skills at diagnosis and treatment of bone and joint injury and procedures
Surgery
- 2 weeks at SRMC
- Become an intern on the general surgery residency service. Develop an understanding of surgical diseases including assisting in the OR
Cardiology
- 2 weeks at SRMC
- Develop skills of cardiovascular diagnosis and treatment
Inpatient Pediatric Cardiology
- 2 weeks at Rocky Mountain Hospital for Children at PSLMC
- Diagnosis and treatment of hospitalized sick children
Newborn nursery
- 1 month at TMCA
- Care for well newborns and recognize and treat sick neonates; spend time treating patients in NICU
Behavioral health
- 1 month of inpatient psychiatry
- Develop a better understanding of psychiatric diagnosis and treatment as it encompasses a good portion of outpatient family medicine office
visits
Elective
- 1 month to focus on a specific track or individual interests
PGY 2
Family Medicine Practice
- 1 month outpatient clinic at Cornerstone Family Practice
- Increase patient volume while further developing skills and confidence in outpatient clinic, ultrasound and procedures as well as OPP/OMM
Inpatient medicine
- 2 months at SRMC as a senior resident
- Attendings from Internal Medicine and Family Medicine provide an exceptional learning environment balancing patient volume and teaching
Obstetrics
- 1 month at TMCA
- Manage and deliver laboring patients in L&D with family physicians, private OB/GYNs, and OB laborists and go to OB clinic
Sports medicine
- 1 month in outpatient family physician/orthopedic surgery offices
- Opportunity to spend 1 winter month in Crested Butte, CO with a busy orthopedic surgeon balanced with time for winter activities
- Opportunity to further develop skills at diagnosis and treatment of bone and joint injury and procedures
Newborn nursery
- 2 weeks at TMCA
- Care for well newborns and recognize and treat sick neonates; spend time treating patients in NICU
Outpatient pediatrics
- 1 month with community pediatrician
- Care for well and sick children
Emergency medicine
- 1 month in TMCA emergency department
- Develop abilities in emergency and urgent care
Surgical subspecialties
- Ophthalmology: 2 weeks outpatient
- ENT: 2 weeks outpatient
Geriatrics
- 1 month at a facility that includes SNF/assisted living/nursing home
- Focus on the management of older patients through the continuum from the hospital to institutionalized care
Health systems management
- 1 month at Cornerstone Family Practice (includes 1 week with medical malpractice carrier)
- Various guest speakers in practice management, assigned readings and shadowing clinic leadership give the residents greater understanding of the health system
Elective
- 1 month to focus on specific track or individual interests
PGY 3
Family Medicine Practice
- 1 month outpatient clinic at Cornerstone Family Practice
- Continue to increase skills and confidence in outpatient clinic, ultrasound and procedures as well as OPP and OMM
Inpatient medicine
- 1 month at SRMC as a senior resident
- Internal medicine attendings provide an exceptional learning environment balancing patient volume and teaching
Pediatric emergency medicine
- 1 month at PSL/C
- Solidify skills in evaluation and treatment of sick children with emergency and urgent care concerns
Emergency medicine
- 1 month in TMCA emergency department
- Develop abilities in emergency and urgent care
Gynecology
- 1 month outpatient gynecology
- Experience in private OB/GYN office dedicated to well-woman health care, diseases of the genital tract, and procedures
Surgical subspecialties
- 2 weeks outpatient urology
Pain management
- 2 weeks of outpatient pain management clinic
- Outpatient experience dedicated to familiarization with addiction and pain management
Neurology
- 2 weeks of outpatient clinic
- Outpatient experience dedicated to diagnosis and treatment of neurologic disorders
Dermatology
- 1 month of outpatient clinic
- Solidify diagnosis and treatment (including procedures) of the skin
Outpatient pediatrics
- 1 month with community pediatrician
- Care for well and sick children
Rural rotation (can be done as PGY-2)
- 1 month outpatient in rural Colorado location
- Develop understanding of rural practice and its joys and limitations in rural Colorado
