The Cahaba Family Medicine Global Health Fellowship

This program is a one-year post-residency fellowship that aims to train family medicine physicians who wish to devote much of their clinical practice to international medicine. Upon successful completion of the fellowship, fellows will have obtained a Diploma in Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (through the UAB Gorgas Course), and be eligible to sit for the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene CTropMed exam for a certificate in tropical medicine.

Objectives

The fellowship will also include a spiritual development curriculum. The goal of this component is to first encourage the fellow to grow in their faith and obedience to Jesus Christ. It will also help the fellow grow in their commitment to love and serve people all over the world and will help them learn to integrate the practice of medicine and their faith.

  • Gain the foundational knowledge to diagnose and treat tropical diseases
  • Gain experience working in a cross-cultural context
  • Completion of the spiritual development curriculum resulting in both personal growth and deepening commitment to love and serve people all over the world.
  • Curriculum

  • UAB Gorgas Course - Diploma in Tropical Medicine
  • 2-months of elective international field work
  • Domestic rotations to expand clinical skills (Travel, HIV, and TB clinics)
  • 3 days of family medicine clinic per week
  • Junior faculty responsibilities including Rural ER coverage and inpatient service coverage.
  • Attend one global health meeting (GMHC, AAFP Global Workshop, ASTHM meeting, WONCA meeting)
  • Option of one-half day per week for spiritual development

  • Board certified or board eligible in Family Medicine
  • Completed an ACGME accredited Family Medicine residency
  • Be able to obtain medical licensure in the state of Alabama
