Hospice and Palliative Care Fellowship

Welcome to the Ochsner Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship Program. We are excited for our first fellow to join us for the 2025-2026 academic year. Our fellows will have the opportunity to train in multiple different settings including a quaternary care center, community hospitals, and with our local hospice agencies. The fellows will take care of patients on our busy inpatient consult services, on our very own hospice and palliative medicine inpatient unit, and within our robust outpatient clinics which provide both in person and virtual visits. The fellows will have protected time for learning with didactic lectures, journal club, and national conference attendance. Our fellows will join a multidisciplinary team with physicians from different backgrounds (IM, EM, PEDs, Psychiatry and Geriatrics), advanced practice providers, licensed clinic social workers with specialized palliative training, and a dedicated board certified chaplain. Additionally, Ochsner’s Palliative Medicine Service is the only Joint Commission certified program in the region.

By the end of the year our fellows will be skilled in complex symptom management and equipped to handle any difficult goals of care conversation. Our fellows will be prepared to practice in any palliative or hospice setting.

Mission & Goals

Palliative Medicine and Supportive Care Service will be guided by the Ochsner Health Mission, “We Serve, heal, Lead, Educate and Innovate” and Vision, “Ochsner will be a global medical and academic leader who will save and change lives. We will shape the future of healthcare through our integrated health system, fueled by the passion and strength of our team of physicians and employees.”

The Palliative Medicine and Supportive Care Service has made a commitment to its departmental mission and vision, therefore, will pursue external certification as a means to achieve an industry recognized validation of quality improvement capability based upon a common set of specific standards.
