UTMB offers an ACGME-accredited, combined 4-year Internal Medicine/Aerospace Medicine Residency. Residents pursuing this pathway will be eligible for both Internal Medicine and Aerospace Medicine board certification, via the American Board of Internal Medicine and American Board of Preventive Medicine, respectively, at the completion of their training. The combined program offers a flexible clinical training schedule in desired IM pathways such as academia, medical sub-specialty fellowship, hospitalist career, or general primary care. Residents from our combined program are trained to provide medical support to populations exposed to aerospace and extreme environments, and to be knowledgeable about the physical and engineering aspects of the flight environment (e.g., including, but not limited to, the physiology of high G-stress, hyper- and hypobaric environments, and radiation exposure). Our residents have the privilege of training in various locations, including the University of Texas Medical Branch, NASA Johnson Space Center, commercial space companies, Federal Aviation Administration, United States Air Force, US Antarctica Program, and various other sites.
All applicants to the combined program must submit an application through the Electronic Residency Application System (ERAS) for combined program number 7574844009.
Applications will be considered separately by each specialty and acceptance into the combined program is contingent upon acceptance to the Emergency Medicine and Aerospace Medicine residency programs.
Residents accepted into the program will be required to apply to the UTMB School of Public and Population Health if a prior MPH or equivalent is not obtained.
Note: Combined applicants interview with both programs independently. Aerospace Medicine interviews consist of consecutive two-days.
