The Northeast Georgia Medical Center (NGMC) Internal Medicine residency is a three-year training program offering residents the full scope of training and clinical experience necessary to become outstanding internists. With a focus on comprehensive training in internal medicine, our program offers a robust curriculum that encompasses a diverse range of clinical experiences. Our dedicated faculty members are not only accomplished clinicians but also passionate educators who are committed to mentoring and guiding residents as they develop the skills and knowledge needed to excel in internal medicine.
Whether pursuing a career in fellowship training, hospital medicine or primary care, our residency program is poised to help residents succeed. With a diverse and accomplished network of graduates spanning various medical specialties and practice settings, NGHS alumni embody the core values of clinical excellence, compassion, and lifelong learning instilled during their time in our program.
Our internal medicine curriculum places a strong emphasis on team-based care, includes direct involvement in systems-based care through multidisciplinary rounds and interaction with case management on all rotations, and involves daily tiered huddles to celebrate good catches, identify safety issues and determine daily readiness. About CoRE Curriculum
In addition to a block schedule, this program offers the Cornerstones of Resident Education (CoRE) – a three-year longitudinal curriculum that engages residents across all programs.
Residents as Learners (Foundational):
The CoRE PGY-1 series is a twice-monthly didactic session designed to expose residents to foundational content in the areas of patient safety and quality, research, wellness, and professional development. Using a variety of teaching modalities including lecture, small group discussion and simulation, residents from all specialties will obtain applicable knowledge and skills that support their development as physicians.
Sessions are facilitated by GME administrative directors, in conjunction with program faculty or other subject matter experts. For AY 2021-22, CoRE PGY-1 sessions will occur on the first and third Thursdays of each month from 4:30 – 6:30 pm. Dinner is provided.
Residents as Teachers:
CoRE PGY-2 Curriculum is designed to take residents to the ‘next level’ in their residency journey. While PGY-1 focuses on foundational material, PGY-2 emphasizes their growth into teachers. Residents will be engaged through multiple simulation activities that involve both giving and receiving feedback and more involved patient care situations involving safety. Furthermore, education on how to be leaders in their QI/Research journey will also be included such as Slicer Dicer training in EPIC. For AY 2021-22, CoRE PGY-2 sessions will occur quarterly on Thursdays from 4:30 – 6:30 pm. Dinner is provided.
Residents as Leaders:
The CoRE Senior series is designed to assist residents and fellows in transitioning to leaders based upon their individual interests. Leadership development series are available by topic and optional to complete. Educational tracks are set up in the areas of research, wellness, safety/quality, community engagement and simulation education. Residents and fellows in the upper levels of training may apply to participate in one or more tracks according to their interests. Approval by the program director is required for any resident to participate. The time commitment and project completion vary depending on the track.
