Internal Medicine Residency

The Unity Health Internal Medicine Residency Program is dedicated to educating and preparing our residents for impressive careers in primary care internal medicine.

We're extremely proud of our ACGME-accredited program's comprehensive curriculum and the strong foundation of teamwork our faculty creates. Explore more about our three-year program and discover how you can join our dedicated team of internal medicine residents.

Curriculum

Residency is a transformative process, a time of growth and application. While essential and practical knowledge is cultivated through the routine of patient care and practice, formal didactics, simulation training, and asynchronous education fertilize, accelerating insight and understanding. Our curriculum is aimed at providing the necessary complement and reinforcement to the excellent bedside internal medicine demonstrated in our teaching clinics and inpatient wards.

Formal Didactics

Daily sessions provide a structure to maximize the learning experience of our residents. These consist of traditional lectures, ACP Board Prep Curriculum, case presentations, monthly journal club, monthly morbidity and mortality conference, and other didactics. Please see below for our typical weekly schedule:

Monday 1-2pm

Tuesday 12-1pm

Wednesday 12-1pm

Thursday 12-1pm

Friday 12-2pm

Simulation Training

On the 1st and 3rd Fridays of every month, our Friday didactic time is dedicated to our simulation lab. We use this time to train for code blues and rapid responses, hone procedural skills, and demonstrate POCUS skills. Our Internal Medicine chiefs and attendings lead this time of practical and focused practice.

Asynchronous Education

Dedication and rigor are essential to the self-investment necessary to be a professional. We provide our residents with several tools and aides to assist them as they set their course for lifelong learning and development: Yale Outpatient Curriculum, MKSAP, Rosh Review, and, for our PGY-2’s and PGY-3’s, the MedStudy Internal Medicine Audio Pearls.

Schedule

The PGY-1 year is about establishing a solid foundation of clinical skills. The majority of the year is spent at Unity Health White County Medical Center, our main site; the majority of rotations are focused on general internal medicine and the essential clinical experiences that will be built on in subsequent years.

4 months of Inpatient Internal Medicine

1 month of Cardiology Consults

1 month of Inpatient Nephrology

1 month of Critical Care Medicine

1 month of Night Float (split into two 2-week rotations)

1 month of Outpatient Internal Medicine

3 months of Electives (1 month is split into two 2-week rotations to correspond with Night Float)

In the PGY-2 year, the resident has the opportunity to be away from the primary hospital with our outpatient subspecialists. The majority of the year consists of these subspecialty rotations, covering the breadth of the Internal Medicine subspecialties and allowing our residents the chance to explore potential career goals. Additionally, the core inpatient rotations are interspersed throughout the year to reinforce the critical skills of the Internist.

2 months of Inpatient Internal Medicine

1 month of Cardiology Consults

1 month of Critical Care Medicine

1 month of Night Float (split as above)

1 month of Outpatient Endocrinology

1 month of Outpatient Neurology

1 month of Inpatient Infectious Disease

1 month of Outpatient Rheumatology

1 month of Outpatient Gastroenterology

1 month of Outpatient Pulmonology

1 month of Electives (split as above)

Finally, the PGY-3 year is spent consolidating the resident’s medical education and applying it to real world practice. Our residents return to our main facility to captain our inpatient hospitalist and nephrology teams, demonstrating the leadership skills they have developed over the past 2 years. More time is devoted to electives than in the PGY-2 year to permit our residents to customize their training to their unique practical needs.

3 months of Inpatient Internal Medicine

1 month of Inpatient Nephrology

1 month of Critical Care Medicine

1 month of Night Float (split as above)

1 month of Outpatient Geriatrics
