Purpose
The purpose of Mobile Infirmary’s Pharmacy Practice (PGY1) pharmacy residency program is to build on the Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and outcomes to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication‐related care of patients with a wide range of conditions, eligible for board certification and eligible for PGY2 pharmacy residency training.
The Infirmary Health System has offered post-graduate training opportunities for pharmacists since 2005. The PGY-1 program is comprised of three traditional positions and two non-traditional positions. Traditional residency training is completed over the course of one year while non-traditional training (offered to current employees) is completed over two years. The residency experience is rigorous and time intensive; consisting of ten rotations, a residency research project and manuscript, and several other longitudinal projects designed to evaluate and optimize patient care at Infirmary Health and meet the goals and objectives of residency training set forth by ASHP’s accrediting standards.
Learning Experiences
At a minimum, each resident will spend two-thirds or more of their time involved in direct patient care activities and approximately half of the residency year is scheduled in required learning experiences inclusive of longitudinal experiences. No more than one-third of direct patient care learning experiences (over a 12-month period) may focus on a specific disease state or population. All rotation blocks are five weeks in duration (except as noted) for a total of 10 blocks throughout the residency year. All residents will be assigned five required learning experiences and select a total of five elective experiences.
Sequencing of Learning Experiences
Learning experiences are scheduled such that areas of possible PGY2 specialization occur prior to the ASHP Midyear Clinical Meeting. Learning experience schedules are modified during the year based on changes in resident interest and/or performance.

All applicants must be registered with the ASHP Residency Matching Service and application items must be submitted via PhORCAS. Please do not submit materials directly to the RPD. Applications will be reviewed and qualified candidates will be invited for an on-site interview.
Program Overview
- Traditional: Three positions offered each year (NMS Code 129413)
- Nontraditional (available for current employees): Two positions offered (NMS Code 129421)
- Eight-week orientation to pharmacy operations and clinical pharmacy consultation services including Epic training, departmental policies, pharmacokinetics, anticoagulation and nutrition support.
- Five-week rotations
- Four weeks designated for project work and holiday coverage

Pharmacy Licensure
The resident must present to the Pharmacy Manager (or designee) their Alabama Pharmacist License Certificate and controlled substances registration card. These documents will be posted in the Department of Pharmacy. If the resident is not licensed as a pharmacist in the state of Alabama at the beginning of the residency program, the resident must obtain licensure prior to start of program.
