Emory's OMFS Division provides multiple education opportunities to learn and develop experience.
The one-to-two-week externship of the Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) of the Emory University School of Medicine is designed for junior and senior dental students who desire dedicated exposure to a wide variety of hospital-oriented OMFS scenarios. For those students interested in pursuing OMFS residency positions, the externship also provides an excellent opportunity to experience residency life.
The extern will be exposed to one of the premier facial trauma services at Grady Memorial Hospital, complex operative surgical cases at Emory University Hospital Midtown, and pediatric patient care at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston. Externs are encouraged to take call with the residents and participate in all didactic experiences.
The Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery offers a one-year non-categorical internship position for dental school graduates who are interested in gaining additional education and experience in oral and maxillofacial surgery. This opportunity provides interns beyond that which they were exposed to during dental school and is oriented to those who are preparing to apply to oral and maxillofacial surgery residency training programs. This program offers extensive clinical experience with inpatient management and outpatient oral surgical procedures. The interns provide care for patients at the Emory teaching hospitals, Grady Memorial Hospital and Egleston Children’s Hospital. Both Grady Memorial Hospital and Egleston Children’s Hospital are Level 1 trauma centers.
Interns are fully integrated in the residency program and their responsibilities are the same as the first-year residents in the categorical programs. In addition to an excellent clinical training experience, interns participate in the all of the residency program’s didactic components.
The Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) is a regional center for the diagnosis and treatment of dental, oral, and maxillofacial pathology and disease. Our providers include faculty, advanced practice providers, and residents who collaborate to provide the highest level of patient care; education for interns, residents, and fellows; and cutting-edge clinical research.
The Division provides services for the Emory Clinic, Emory University Hospital, Emory University Hospital Midtown, Winship Cancer Institute, Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, and Grady Memorial Hospital. We remain one of the largest and busiest programs in the US with more that 1,800 major surgical cases per year and nearly 20,000 outpatient visits. The Division provides multiple services including dentoalveolar surgery, dental implants, sedation, pediatric oral and maxillofacial surgery, orthognathic surgery, pathology, trauma, cleft lip and palate surgery, temporomandibular joint surgery, infections, and surgical oncology and microvascular reconstruction.
