Our large, full-time faculty in the core disciplines will teach and supervise you directly throughout our comprehensive curriculum of topics, including cardiology, community medicine, EKG, emergency medicine, ENT, family medicine, geriatrics, hospital service, internal medicine, neurology, obstetrics and gynecology, occupational medicine, ophthalmology, orthopedics, pediatrics, practice management, psychiatry, radiology, rural medicine, sports medicine, surgery, urology and ventilator management.
Our program has a strong inpatient component. We have an active inpatient service allowing for high-level care of our patients. This includes a thriving critical care component with open ICUs at DCH Regional Medical Center. Our typical inpatient census is 10 to 12 patients for each family medicine team. Residents routinely see acute care, urgent care in Tuscaloosa and chronic health issues.
New residents are assigned their own panel of patients, the size of which increases over their time in residency. Family medicine faculty are always available for consultation. In a half-day clinic, interns will see two to three patients, PGY-2s will see eight to 10 patients and PGY-3s will see 10 to 12 patients.
Patient care is also supported by patient education, dietetic services and social services.
Residents meet every Tuesday from 12:15 pm to 4:15 pm for lectures and workshops from specialists in their respective disciplines. We have a morning report on the inpatient services at least three days a week. Journal Club is held monthly during Tuesday didactics. Formal didactics are supported with numerous resources, including online courses and modules.
We have lectures most Tuesdays on a variety of health care topics.
