This detailed overview of our program features our faculty and residents discussing the many facets of what makes the Emory general surgery residency so special.

Global & Rural Surgery Track

Overview

The Emory Global & Rural Surgery Track trains residents to address the suboptimal outcomes and surgical disease processes that affect urban and rural populations globally to ensure care for all communities. The Department of Surgery’s Track was among the first American Board of Surgery-approved international surgical training experiences. The Track has expanded since its inception to include opportunities at the local, national, and international levels, enabling residents to work for improved outcomes in a variety of communities. Interested residents apply during the middle of their intern year to the program. While only one resident is selected for the clinical component, all residents can participate in the education and research components of the track.

Global Surgery Track Curriculum

Program Goals

  • To provide high-quality and patient-centered surgical care to all populations in Atlanta, rural Georgia, and the world.
  • To effectively manage the challenges of those with limited access to surgical services through a combination of formal instruction, clinical exposure, and dedicated research on disease processes.
  • To create academic leaders and policy experts in surgery who will continue to work towards advancing the field from within academia, governmental, and nongovernmental organizations to provide care for all communities.
  • To combine the interest, experience, and instruction in urban, rural, and global care to create a unified field--and, thus, community--devoted to the surgical management of all populations who face challenges both domestically and internationally.
  • To contribute to the pedagogy of general surgery residency—that an understanding of economic circumstances and disease burden might be integrated into all general surgery residency curricula.

The general surgery residency of the Emory Department of Surgery is a five-year, ACGME-accredited program approved for nine categorical positions and five non-designated preliminary positions. Residents have the option of doing just the five years or incorporating an additional one to two-year research sabbatical. They may also pursue such advanced degrees as an MBA, MPH, Masters of Science in Clinical Investigation, or a PhD.

Emory Surgery is a component of the Woodruff Health Sciences Center of Emory University, which includes the Emory schools of MedicineNursing, and Public HealthYerkes National Primate Research Center, one of seven national primate research centers funded by the NIH; Emory Winship Cancer Institute of Emory University, Georgia's first and only NCI-designated Cancer Center; and Emory Healthcare, the most comprehensive health care system in Georgia. Being part of such a vibrant and multi-faceted campus grounds our residency program in a stimulating culture of synergistic interaction and cross-collaboration.

The Emory medical community also has close ties with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the American Cancer Society, the Georgia Institute of Technology, and other research institutions throughout the state and nation.
