"It is my sincere pleasure to welcome you to our website where you can explore our curriculum, resources, and other information about the Internal Medicine Residency Program at Piedmont Macon Medical Center. We are committed to providing you with an excellent and safe clinical learning environment created by our knowledgeable and compassionate faculty. The foundation of our program is providing you with quality clinical training that emphasizes clinical excellence, teamwork, leadership, and career development. Our residents experience a broad range of pathology that prepares them well for careers in hospital medicine, primary care, or fellowship training.
During the three years of your residency, you will have robust clinical exposure to both inpatient and outpatient medicine and gain expertise in office, hospital, and emergency settings. You will have a great degree of autonomy in overseeing patient care as you grow in your competence. You will be part of a program where residents are treated with respect, their needs are responded, and ideas for improvement are considered. Additionally, nurses, pharmacists and other health care providers round with our physician teams in multidisciplinary rounds providing real-time feedback to physicians on issues such as drug-drug interactions, cost of medications, rehabilitation needs and discharge planning, etc.
The program offers a dynamic and exciting didactic curriculum that includes both traditional and innovative components as detailed in subsequent pages. The research coordinator helps facilitate residents in creating robust research, publications, and presentations. Our residents are encouraged and supported to engage in scholarly activity, ranging from local and regional presentations, to attending national conferences and publishing scientific manuscripts.
Piedmont Macon is affiliated with Mercer University School of Medicine (MUSM), which provides residents with access to library resources, research support, and the opportunity to work with medical students to sharpen their teaching skills and be a mentor.
We believe in the Piedmont Promise and live up to it so we can make a positive difference in every life we touch."
Sincerely,
Muhammad Awais, MD
Program Director
The Department of Internal Medicine at the Mercer University School of Medicine was established in the early 1980's with the founding of our Medical School. Under the aegis of our founding Chair, Dr. Waddell Barnes our department began the Internal Medicine Residency Program in 1986.
The residency program has been fully accredited by the ACGME since the initiation of our Charter Class. We recently received a five year accreditation cycle, the maximum given by the RRC. Strong support from the Medical Center Navicent Health enables our program to focus on providing outstanding training opportunities in Internal Medicine.
Our 27 categorical Internal Medicine residents and two preliminary Internal Medicine residents are able to train in a broad and richly diverse setting. To train a well-rounded and “complete” internist, our department feels that it is important for the residents to fine-tune their sub-specialty skills on their electives and participate in meaningful research projects. Many research opportunities exist and ample support is provided to assist our residents.
We are proud of our entire faculty who have demonstrated a zeal for teaching and especially enjoy the interactions with students and residents. Our teaching activities are designed to be diverse, inclusive and germane to the practice of Internal Medicine. Our department is dynamic, adaptive, and small enough to have excellent collegial communication.
