Pediatric Residency

The Pediatric Residency program at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center is a comprehensive, fully accredited three-year training program with broad inpatient and outpatient experiences. At the core of our program is a strong focus on high-value, family-centered care. Faculty and residents enjoy the small-town and rural communities throughout New Hampshire and Vermont in which they practice and live. Our program strongly supports and promotes the Dartmouth Health commitment to belonging.

Our Pediatric Residency program is part of Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center and Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth. We provide the only tertiary facility for children in New Hampshire.

Mission

We believe that general pediatrics is a foundational part of providing comprehensive care in any setting. We foster the ability to manage complex care, the courage to tolerate uncertainty, and the moral clarity to engage in advocacy. We hold trainees accountable to standards of excellence, entrusting each individual with increasing autonomy only when she or he demonstrates competence and ownership.

Program aims

  • To advance individual and program knowledge and skills.
  • To provide high-value, family-centered care to support clinical excellence across care settings.
  • To advocate for patients, the profession and society.

Curriculum

The Children's Hospital at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center Pediatric Residency program meets all the requirements of the Residency Review Committee (RRC) and is fully accredited by the ACGME.

Overview and block schedule

The goal of our program is to foster the personal and professional growth of our residents and to prepare exemplary pediatricians who are humanistic, compassionate and committed to children's health. The curriculum is divided into two components:

  • Core curriculum (required)
  • Individualized curriculum
  • X + Y schedule
We transitioned to an X+Y schedule at the start of the 2022 year in a “3+1” model. It has proven to be a beneficial transition as our residents have enjoyed increased curricular personalization and schedule flexibility. Highlights of the ambulatory (Y) week include:
    • Academic half day with protected learning time focused on primary care topics
    • Personal half day to use for appointments and wellness
    • Longitudinal experiences including Community Pediatrics in the intern year and electives in second and third year
    • Continuity clinic and acute care experiences

Educational highlights

We offer an individualized curriculum for every resident to maximize their educational opportunities. Opportunities for on-the-fly feedback are created by the close relationships between our faculty and residents. In addition to our individualized curriculum, evaluation, and feedback, we incorporate simulation training into our residency curriculum.

Advocacy projects

Many of our residents are involved in community service or advocacy projects, often providing a direct service to the community in partnership with local organizations.

Global health opportunities

The Global Health Program (GCHP) at Children's Hospital at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center works to creative sustainable partnerships that prioritize worldwide improvement of children's health. GCHP offers our residents the opportunity to participate in global health initiatives as well as in the vibrant educational activities at Dartmouth College.
