Reproductive Health & Advocacy Fellowship

The Reproductive Healthcare and Advocacy Fellowship at the University of Washington (UW) develops family medicine leaders who champion comprehensive reproductive health services and access within primary care and under-resourced settings around the country. In collaboration with the Reproductive Health Access Project (RHAP), this fellowship is a full-time year-long post-residency training program focused on developing providers’ clinical, teaching, and advocacy skills in reproductive healthcare.

Fellows will be based in the UW Family Medicine Department, work closely with residents and faculty in the UW Family Medicine Residency program, and have their continuity clinic at the UW Family Medicine Residency Northgate Clinic. In addition to clinical teaching in primary care and reproductive health at the Northgate Clinic, the fellow will have the opportunity to hone their own advanced family planning and abortion clinical skills at high volume clinical sites near Seattle and in Yakima, Washington.

Numerous opportunities for training, teaching, advocacy, and research are available to the UW Reproductive Healthcare and Advocacy Fellow. As a Reproductive Health Education in Family Medicine (RHEDI) training site, our family medicine residency clinics provide comprehensive reproductive health and family planning services on site. Fellows will be engaged in clinical teaching with residents and students in our family medicine clinics. Our fellowship faculty also lead the Reproductive Health Interest Group (RHIG) within the UW Family Medicine Residency and the CREATE (Continuing Reproductive Health Education for Advanced Training Efficacy) program which is a family medicine inter-residency collaboration focused on cultivating leadership, clinical, and advocacy training for family medicine. Fellows are encouraged to be involved in curriculum planning and advocacy training with RHIG and CREATE. Mentorship for scholarship, research, and quality improvement projects is available through our fellowship faculty and the UW Family Planning Division in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Curriculum

  • Focused abortion training in both urban and rural settings to ensure clinical competence up to 16 weeks. Fellows will train in multiple sites to broaden their experience working as an abortion provider in varying community and clinical settings.
  • Fellow’s personal growth and education: opportunities for participation in faculty development, presenting at regional and national family medicine conferences, monthly family planning journal club meetings, monthly family planning fellow didactics and works in progress meetings with the UW Family Planning Division, and advocacy projects promoting access to reproductive health in primary care settings or low-resource settings.
  • Support for Physicians for Reproductive Health’s Leadership Training Academy (LTA) to develop leadership and advocacy skills. If accepted, this will require three weekend workshops and longitudinal advocacy work over the course of the year.
  • Teaching/mentorship opportunities: involvement in family medicine residency didactics and teaching, and mentorship and teaching with UW medical students and allied health students interested in reproductive health and access to care.
  • Opportunities for practicing prenatal care, inpatient obstetrics, colposcopy and other reproductive health procedures, LGBTQIA+ healthcare, as well as opportunities for training in vasectomy and gender affirming care per discussion with fellowship directors and based on individual training goals.
  • Support for formal ultrasound training at a week-long CME course, based on fellow’s needs.
  • One session per week of precepting family medicine residents and four sessions per week of providing continuity care for a primary care panel at the UW Family Medicine Residency Northgate Clinic.
  • Year-long “trainer in training” model focused on mentoring fellows to develop full spectrum reproductive health clinical skills, integrate these skills into primary care settings, and teach these skills to others.
